We were waiting for you. We have ice cream

„We Were Waiting for You. We Have Ice-cream“ is August Künnapu’s third solo
exhibition in Riga. It consists of paintings from 2010 – 2021: one serie, a gymnast
and a bunch of cats from different periods. The painter accompanies most of his
shows among other works with some cat paintings – they keep good energy in the
households and also exhibition halls.
The Four Elements series (2021) examines four basic elements: earth, air, water
and fire of which the first three are depicted directly on the paintings while the last
one lies in the heart of a viewer. The whole of the elements presents a dream-like
composition, inspired by Eastern-European aesthetics of the 1920s and 1930s. This
is the way how Künnapu plays with characters from everyday situations, decorating
them with joyful colours, historical hints and a touch of mystery behind his
characteristic deceptive naive style.
The exhibition excites, makes a good mood and an irrestistible wish to dance in the
Vermanes Park.
